Transition from Secondary to Senior Secondary

Transition to the Senior Secondary School form the Secondary School marks another milestone – new environment, new classmates, new teachers, and, in many cases, new school. However, unlike the previous transition to Secondary from Primary Section where changes are accommodated for through careful and slow introduction, this stage presents the familiar or new subjects at a depth and width previously unknown. It is like being thrown straight from an escalator to a speeding roller-coaster. This big leap challenges students even in their most favourite and confident areas. Majority of students get winded by this huge and sudden upswing in teaching style: less hand-holding, more self-directed learning, break-neck pace, huge workload, and longer curricula and extracurricular hours.

Following is a list of steps that will help you to enjoy the two years of Senior Secondary School while being focused for success ahead in life:

1

Take stock

Assess your strengths and challenges before taking the big decision of choosing your subject-combination. At this stage it is absolutely indispensable to make a well-informed and well-thought choice as per your passion and interest.

2

Find your ‘How’

Evaluate the kind of learner you are and what are the best studying methods that work for you. You should have a good idea of what type of studying works best for you- flash cards, rewriting your notes, finding a study group, etc. Find yourself the perfect study-spot – whether it’s the library, a quiet corner, a nice bench or a specific room in your house.

3

Prioritize your time

This is a great time to expand on your extracurricular involvement and explore leadership opportunities. These engagements enhance your skills and aid your learning, but it should not be at the expense of your results. Take up commitments that you KNOW you can handle, and not those you “THINK” you can handle.

4

Consistency is the key

Be an active student in the class, stay attentive, and do not leave revision up to the last minute before any test/exam. You are required to actively and effectively take notes and spend enough time practising questions to master the concept. Avoid pulling an all-nighter and have the discipline to study and review your notes consistently.

5

Treat your mind and body well

It is a well-established truth that you need positive mindset and good food, sleep, and exercise to be successful. When you treat your mind and body well, you feel better and more motivated, so this creates a positive snowball effect for every other aspect of your life.

6

Seek help

Most important of all, whenever in doubt, you must ask for help. Your teachers, parents and elders who have already been through this phase do know your challenges and insecurities. Their experience and knowledge can prove to be of immense help to you, much more than you could ever imagine. You can also confide in your friends who, you think, can help you with your queries.

The changeover from being a Secondary School student to a Senior Secondary one is truly crucial and exciting at the same time. Even if you think you have been dreaming of this and are assured that you are fully prepared, you are likely to struggle, at least a little bit, as this is the biggest transition most of you make in your life up until this point. While it brings with it an ocean of possibilities, it’s never without a pinch of uncertainty and distractions. So, you have to ensure that with your high-spiritedness and optimism, you make the most of it enabling it to contribute to your experience as a young, capable learner and future leader of the world.
